Swimming

1.

She’s hanging over a swimming pool
from a clothes-line—her legs
dangling, her toes reaching
just under the warm
surface of the water. . .

Her arms are getting tired; her legs
splashed; her face and back
sweaty with the effort of
holding herself up, keeping herself
dry—

she thinks
she’s swimming.

2.

You’re hanging over a swimming pool
from a clothes-line—your legs
dangling, your toes reaching
just under the warm
surface of the water. . .

Your arms are getting tired; your legs
splashed; your face and back
sweaty with the effort of
holding yourself up, keeping yourself
dry—

you think
you’re swimming.

3.

I’m hanging over a swimming pool
from a clothes-line—my legs
dangling, my toes reaching
just under the warm
surface of the water. . .

My arms are getting tired; my legs
splashed; my face and back
sweaty with the effort of
holding myself up, keeping myself
dry—

I think
I’m swimming.
