RUSSIAN MELANCHOLIA

I employ melancholia in dark display, obvious as chunks
of stale, brown Russian bread, to wait in solitude, as
recurring silken shades of sadness are dispelled with
slight toss of my right hand, while the left holds tight to
inherited coarse wool habit; well worn through a multitude
of generations. My soul bleeds dry, bitter tears, while indigo
clouds closely drape both shoulders, fitting like a sable cape.
Providing false comfort. Melancholia follows behind, trailing
as an unsullied bridal train, sometimes slipping between
my legs, mocking a lover's cold hands. This melancholia,
hidden by early morning light, richly and sweetly butters
thick layers of my proud heritage, allowing shadows to swallow
me each evening in ever-greater gulps, then warmly, tightly,
covers me in sorrow, with torn, fragile blanket; warding away
constant, daily returning chill, of my own living specters.

Michael-Earle Carlton writes poetry and short stories and, over the years, has been published in numerous journals and magazines throughout the U.S.  She teaches poetry workshops for adults and teens, has been President of The Society of Poets, Int'l., for the past 15 years and moderates monthly informal readings in her Ft. Lauderdale home for poets of all levels. She was once a guest of the Yucatan (Mexico) Cultural Department where she read her "oeuvres" before a gathering of local poets and authors. On another occasion her poems were read before a large gathering of people at a special cultural celebration in Guatemala. She finds the Internet a wonderful concept; anything that fosters poetry can only be a positive thing.  She may have been born in Provence, France, but she can't think of a better place to be than in Florida, where every day is a wonderfully challenging experience.
