The
Duel
Upon my honor and conscious,
I tell thee true,
I never meant to cross the line.
I never wanted to duel.
We make appropriate moral remarks,
About the cradle of humanity.
But hide within the shadows,
When it comes to you and me.
Gazing deeply through the other
Each waiting for a private symphony.
One to play long sorrowful tunes,
One an ode to disharmony.
A riposte on my count,
And you the counter measure.
One slip of the blade that lines your tongue,
To me a bleeding shudder.
Alas, my wounded heart ,
Gives way to yet another stroke.
I cannot guard against such talent,
Yet another riposte from beneath my cloak.
Mocking me from a distance,
I saw you look through private eyes,
I wilted beneath your charge,
Guarded whispers behind perfect lies.
Between you and me and the rapier,
Lies a fountain of divulged truths.
The duel will not end,
Much to the dismay of the on-looking fools.
The silence speaks volumes,
The invisible crowd does not stir.
They await the final outcome
That never will occur.
How much vanity lurks,
in our warmest deference?
To the victor goes the spoils,
To the defeated, eternal rest.
