desert
motel
dawn was tepid,
far as we could go. this oasis opened onto
a scummy pool, a weak creaking uneven mattress
water contamination reports from an old TV
drove all night wrapped in complicated gloom,
burned out from indifferent matinal heat, exhausted
into release. let's shower and nap, salad bar, let's drive
home. dripping naked, a different awake, i couldn't let go.
on the bed three or four different ways,
against a warp-flaked dresser, rocking
a tipping chair (her legs spread so wide),
flat scratchy carpet, staring eyes tightly covered,
thick air clean of sleep and meandering years ...
the startled silence cowering, these animals.
