Landscape

It’s krill. The girl says no,
it’s kelp. We argue for a moment
then pause, argue then pause, ‘til

it’s time again to buffet, crack crabs, suck
iceless tea and watch the inexplicable
stuff rope itself beneath & before
us, watch it bisect these listless,

semicircular waters into this here
and this here. It pushes the quadrant
that harbors two buddy-sized beds (still
pressed together for a lackadaisical tangle).

It restrains the quadrant that ballasts the holy dogs
of Saint Maarteen (lazy, panting mongrels
of the balmy court that will shrink, soon,
to a haze not unlike live twine in this fishy sea).
