Night Books
Words rise up from the pages, fold into the silence
and beyond, lift past the cone of shaded light
that guides you sightful with its single
white hand, its fingers stretched from rooms of sleep,
walls of mountains shedding granite into oceans,
into oceans waving at stars, an aurora borealis
forming music out of sky, the stories of night books,
the melancholy sex, the laughter after dreaming,
the dreaming faded to a stain of meaning splashed
across blank paper.
Heartleaf Popple
Be my tree,
the last left standing
in the clearcut blotch.
I will kiss mystery
in your branches,
tines
sharp as starbeams
carving this night.
Let the idiocy of poems
guide us both into silence;
sculpture of cloudshape
is the drifted face
of the past,
its vast blindness
staining everything;
even as your eyes
touch these words
the heartleaf popple
plunges the wind, its shape
the question mark
that ends every sentence.
