In Certain Corners
Don’t ignore the perfect contrast
of stars gasping in pond water,
glinting through muck
like an uncle’s lost fishing hooks
or daggers at the bottom of a drain—
In the old black and white movies,
it was all about who lit whose cigarette.
But someone went and tossed
all the matchbooks in that pond too, as if
they could work their heat down there—
But the lily backs still shiver,
and the sunken moon stays cratered
with cold, while up here on the dry land
everything outside our mouths is burning
in all the wrong places. And right now
in a seedy corner of the city,
cheap sealant is starting to soften,
like a whole parade of wax lips kissing
on a hot boulevard, and behind
the loosening panes of an abandoned aquarium,
the hammerheads thud like dark fists,
squint their eyes, molasses black,
already drunk on sweet designs,
brains sponge-pink, already marinating
in freedom. I’d say we have a week or two.
