An Introduction to the Sandbox
by T. Birch

Like the snake-oil elixir of an earlier era, the world-wide-web was proclaimed to be a panacea for so many fields of human endeavor, that no one could be blamed for being a little skeptical at this point that any fundamental changes have truly occurred. Yet, among those who read, write and care deeply about poetry I believe the internet has sparked a revolution that cannot be denied.

It has opened the field to many more participants than at any other time in history. People who never considered poetry before are now avid readers and writers because of the net. At the same time it has provided these poets the chance to receive almost immediate feedback, not just from a small group of peers in the academy, but from a broad range of individuals literally scattered across our globe.

These poetry forums and posting boards and e-zines are often scoffed at by some as being the repository of rank amateurs and works of lesser quality, and there is no denying that a lot of dross fills these forums. Yet, the very rawness and newness of many of the people who participate in them has led to work that I believe future ages will compare favorably with anything now being seen in the established print journals. But why wait for the future?

What follows is a sampling of poems and poets from one of these places which we believe deserves a wider audience: Trash Poetry aka Sandbox. The core of regular posters at this site is not large in number, but it is large in scope, with poets from India, New Zealand, Canada and all across the United States. Through this site they have established a true community who learn and inspire each other with their different voices and styles. MiPo has gleaned a few of the gems we found there over the last several months to offer to you, our readers. Enjoy the view.
