Natalka Noverili |
| a
little story |
one time I went so high up the hill
I spied the mountain beyond the valley
I asked the mountain shall I come to you
oh no dear said the mountain to me intimately
you stay right there and one day soon I'll come to you
I stood a long time stunned by the ominous
ominous magnetic force of mountainous promise
pinned to the rim
rim of the bowl of the valley
valley that by day spread shallow and far
far and at night came shriveling near
near narrow and deep
I never moved
never thought once
once that mountains couldn't sprout feet
never never crossed my mind that a mountain is all stone
stone and stones can't speak
speak
I swear I swear
there were days
days staring at it's stony face
I felt the piedmont lift
lift and heard the thud
thud as if come
come a word one
one step ahead and
and as if the earth had shook
and the foot
foot hills had moved
closer
the best face
I can put on it now
was something spoke
maybe my heart
and what I heard
what I recognized as the promise of soon
as familiar as a friend's
was the echo of myself
for my dear friend D. A.
